Here is a look at why this blog was nominated for the 2011 Bombies.

In Morocco ‘Id el Adha will be tomorrow (unfortunately not today as in Makkah and Europe and elsewhere). So we are fasting today and I still have a lot to prepare such as baking, cleaning and gift-making – you know for Muslims these holidays are like Christmas for Christians, it is the most beautiful and important celebration every year and we remember prophet Abraham (as) and his incredible devotion to God (want to know more about ‘Id? Read here).

To all those who celebrate already today and to everyone else who celebrates tomorrow we wish a very blessed ‘Id , may Allah shower you with His mercy and make these days peaceful, happy and special for you.

Here is a look at why this blog was nominated for the 2011 Bombies.

This oldest Festival in Morocco, Sefrou’s Cherry festival celebrates 90 years since the first festivities to celebrate the once harvest of cherries. This year, the 2010 comeback of the Festival promises to stimulate and entertain Sefrou town and its region’s inhabitants. The four day gala of a festivities include a procession led by this years Cherry Queen, (5 pm Satuyrday)live music in the main square (10 pm Thurs/Fri/Sat), a fantasia every morning, poetry, theatre, clowns for children and a gather of local associations and craftpeople’s creations and activities.
seFest, Sefrou’s Association for the Contemporary Arts, has gathered close to 40 images of visual artist’s works from Sefrou or those who have been inspired by the ancient beber/jewish town. These representations are printed on large-scale supports and placed on the building around the medina and new town; a homage to the visual art that has derived from Sefrou, before and now.

grew up with things that were ethnic, I grew up with things that were tribal, I grew up with things that made people furrow their brows. There were hookahs from Iran, there were breastplates from Kenya, there were crosses from Ethiopia. It was a strange and curious house filled with strange and curious things.

Those sorts of things fill my own home today. I seek them out, I covet them, I collect them. But sometimes I want things that are different. Glamorous things. Things that sparkle and catch the light.

I bought one of those things recently.Italian, 60+ years old, found in the Marrakech souks (where else?). Now strung up from a ladder in my bedroom like some kind of art installation. Waiting to be hung in a place where I can look up and see it overhead. Do you have chandeliers in your home?

Here is a look at why this blog was nominated for the 2011 Bombies.

Moroccan Jewish communities around the world are upset after the Jewish hospital in Tangiers was torn down.

According to reports, the Benchimol Hospital in Tangiers which has been standing for more than 110 years was torn down Friday night before Passover at 2 am. “There is a law in Morocco that you cannot enter any private property between 10 pm and 6 am,” explained a concerned member of the Moroccan Jewish community in Toronto. “There was no warning about it.”

The community is now concerned that further action against Jewish institutions may be taken by the authorities in Morocco and wishes to make the public aware of the situation. Although the Tangiers Jewish community now only consists of about 40 Jews (at its peak there were 22,000 Jews in the community), there are still important Jewish landmarks in the area, such as a Jewish nursing home and two cemeteries.

“The new cemetery which is in the outskirts of Tangiers is on the highway going to Rabat. At one point it was really let gone. You could hardly go inside the cemetery because there were snakes; there were bushes in between the tombs,” said the concerned individual. “It was not maintained at all. Last year we sent e-mails and finally they got their act together and they cleaned it completely, and I do have to admit that they did a very good job. But it took years of pounding and pounding until they did it.”

Here is a look at why this blog was nominated for the 2011 Bombies.

Let me start by saying that organized religion and I parted ways many years ago and I usually refrain from interfering in “matters of faith.” The current hysteria around the location of the proposed Cordoba center is a bit of different matter. It’s only superficially about religion; it is actually about the core of our nation’s moral principles. It is about freedom of religion and the right to express one’s faith in public without fearing persecution. They say it is not about the idea of the mosque itself; it is about the location. Location location location! a chant more convincing when it comes from real estate agents. They seem to believe it more than the pundits, “experts,” talking heads, etc… who sell their hard-line misinformed opinions on every talk show looking for hot button issues to whip their audiences into hysteria in a quest for ratings. The more I thought about this, the more I realized that the current hysteria benefits no one except the most extremist and hate filled fringes in both directions.

Ramadan has made the transition back to Morocco, after two months in the states, very kind. Most people are being the best they can be. Those who generally “know better”, in Ramadan actually “do better”. When I walk by, I can recognize the young men who might, if they weren’t fasting, make boorish cat-calls to me and any other female. But because it’s Ramadan, they just lower their gaze (and I don’t need to puke, thank you very much). One of the Islamic teachings about Ramadan is that “demons are chained up, and the gates of heaven are thrown open”. It does seem that people are freed from their demons, because when you give up food, smoking, sex, drinking and drugs, for 14 hours a day, what demons are left? I drove through the empty streets of Marrakesh, and really that was a treat in itself. There is no other time when the driving is that pleasant. The Koutoubia mosque was built some 1000 years ago (ok, I’m a little loose with dates), by the founders of Marrakesh, the Almoravids. It was then partially destroyed and rebuilt by the Almohads around 1150 C.E. It stands at an impressive 69 m (221 ft) which was quite an architectural feat for its time. Tonight, the towering minaret is all ablaze with lights. Atop the minaret are 4 decorative golden balls, tour guides will often perpetuate the urban myth that highest ball was donated by the wife of Sultan Yaqoub el Mansour, who melted down all her gold jewelry, as penance for breaking her fast. (I find this Arabian nights-esque tale rather implausible, as there are 3 ways of atoning for a fast that is broken for no reason: either freeing a slave, or if that’s not possible, then feeding 60 poor people, or fasting 2 months back to back).
