This recipe is one that will come easy if you live in the medina. What there is a shortage of are inspiring beetroot recipes, which [...]... - Moussem in Moulay Idriss14 July 2010, 3:52 pm

- Fès : Histoire d'un cimetière26 May 2010, 4:58 pm

- Here and There13 July 2010, 4:31 pm
Without even noticing, I have reached the halfway point of my vacation in California. So far, the time has been spent rejuvenating and catching up with family and friends. The contrast between here and Fes strikes me everyday. Life in Fes is full of colorful chaos and striking contrasts between interior and exterior life. Here in San Francisco, daily life is full of order and calm. In Fes I am ‘strange’, in San Francisco I am one of many and it’s easy to be anonymous. Fes is hot and dry, m... - Fes to San Francisco8 June 2010, 12:20 pm
The last days in Morocco, before heading to the States for a 3-month stay, were filled with organization and anticipation. I packed all my clothes and personal belongings into one small room to make a 4th room available for sleeping. The house looked great and it was so gratifying to see every room in the house in use and cleaned. I actually felt very proud of myself as I looked at the totality of the house and recalled all the work it has taken to get it to this stage. The heat was on and Hassa... - Making the Morning Rounds21 May 2010, 10:56 am
I opened my door this morning to go to a few local shops for breakfast items. As usual, the first thing I did was sweep the debris the street cleaners left in front of my door. This is the only place I know of where street cleaners deposit dirt at your doorstep rather than take it away. Oh well. I must say, great care seems to have been taken to ensure it is evenly distributed. After tidying up a bit, I took the short walk to the end of my street. I greeted the egg man. Once again, he is fosteri... - Colorful or Contemptible?17 May 2010, 12:17 pm
Seems to me that the answer to this question is the key to my own peace of mind. – or lack thereof. If I can answer ‘colorful’ I am much happier and accepting. If I answer ‘contemptible’ I am in for a lot of suffering. It’s my choice. As is everything in life I suppose. So I practice finding the color in situations that give me a start. Here are a few examples of finding the color (sometimes a light tint) in everyday occurrences.#1 The Man With the Slashed FaceThe other day I opened ... - More than Homesick9 May 2010, 6:33 pm
I miss my friends. Two of the four friends expected last month made it to Fes, despite the air traffic mayhem following the volcanic eruption (the first one, that is). I was so lucky half the party made it and their visit was a needed tonic. But then again, their visit highlighted something missing in my life ... good friends with whom I share some history. Ever since they left I have been full of wishes to return home to California. I struggle every day with my dissatisfaction about my life here... - Not Your Typical Tour25 April 2010, 9:36 am
A couple of my good friends made it to Fes after 3½ years of following the ups and downs of my life on this blog and listening to my stories during the two visits I’ve managed to make back to California. Despite the volcano and with great determination, they managed to get across the U.S. and arrive in Fes a mere 12 hours after their planned arrival time. Their plane was diverted to Marrakech on the final leg of their journey and they were boarded onto a bus for a 9-hour drive to Fes. But the... - Being Philosophical17 April 2010, 8:12 pm
Before the eruption of the volcano in Iceland (I’m not even trying to remember its name, yet alone how to pronounce it) there was a plan in place for four lovely friends from San Francisco to converge at my home for a weeklong visit in Fes. We haven’t seen each other for two years. They were coming from points in America and Europe and were expected to have been happily ensconced in my house by mid-afternoon. After I arrived home from school (around 6:30) I had planned to take them to an art... - Cafe Clock14 April 2010, 7:43 am
I often say that if it weren’t for Café Clock, I wouldn’t still be here in Fes. It’s no secret that I’ve had a great deal of difficulty here and yesterday was one of those days when I would have given anything to just pack up and leave. I was fed up. Again! As so often happens when I have a meltdown, I still had to pull myself together and go out into the world to work. I guess that’s because I work everyday … either teaching, or giving dance lessons, or doing writing assignments or ... - The Monthly Marjane Shopping Trip7 April 2010, 8:39 pm
Once a month I go to a superstore here called Marjane where I load up on cleaning supplies, paper products, beauty products and some foodstuff. Occasionally I purchase something I’ve been wanting for a while … like a vacuum cleaner or a chauffage to heat the house. I also routinely buy myself a treat like any cheese that isn’t “La Vache Qui Rit” and crackers, or a medium-sized bag of peanut M&M’s (which never seem to remain unopened during the taxi ride home). I always try to go whe... - Work, Work, Work23 March 2010, 9:15 am
When I was living in San Francisco, it was becoming increasingly difficult to find work. During my last couple of years there, I came to grips with the fact that I was just getting too old to be hired by others. So, I planned and started my own business. But it was tough going and I didn’t have enough capital to maintain it after a year. Of course, locating my shop in a flood zone and getting hit with 4 feet of flood water the very first week I moved in didn’t help matters. But here in Fes, ...

- Hating Hijabs or Badgering Blondes: What’s the Difference?29 July 2010, 1:35 am
Last night around 9:00 PM, I was walking home in the dark from a function near my office. After a long day at work, I felt like a rubber band that had been stretched too many times. I had just reached Dupont Circle, a small park in central Washington, DC, when a wild yell snapped me from my daze. Ahead of me, on one of the wide paths leading to the circle’s central fountain, a small pack of teenagers were cackling and swerving menacingly around a man and woman. At a glance, I noticed two thing... - Reflections on South Africa 2010: World Watches Cup, US Watches World15 July 2010, 2:25 am
The 2010 World Cup in South Africa has come and gone. I did not reach Africa's first World Cup, although I did my best to watch every game (and for the first few weeks, before returning to a desk job here in Washington, I came close to doing so). Watching this Cup here in the US was nothing like back in 2006, when each muggy evening I crowded with fellow spectators around the TV in a ramshackle Tanzanian bar. The contrast is unmistakable; while the rest of the planet takes a month-long break eve... - Wonder and Winces: Mixed Emotions in Dubai22 June 2010, 5:31 pm
Many people who know me assume that I would accept any free ticket, that I would jump on a train or plane to any destination, all without thinking twice. Not so. On my unofficial List of Places I Never Want to Go, Dubai held second place for years. (Nothing could be worse than Vegas.) Everything I had heard made me want to avoid ultra-artificial Dubai: the excesses of the city's buildings, the commercialism of the malls, the environmental degradation from golf courses and ski slopes built in the... - The Bottom Line on Iraq15 June 2010, 5:40 am
A week after I returned home from Iraq, I read about a recent survey examining quality of life in cities around the world. I tracked down the report, resigned to what I would find. Sure enough, Baghdad was dead last - planet Earth's least livable city. That Iraq has a long way to go before it attains a livable measure of stability is undeniable. After years of hearing (read: tuning out) stories of the atrocities which Baghdad's residents suffer every day, I found conditions in the city were even... - Kurdistan: The Other Face of Iraq14 June 2010, 1:22 am
Iraq Map The highlight of my trip to Iraq was the five days I spent in the northern region of Kurdistan - not least because it finally offered a chance to escape the prison-like compound in Baghdad. Along with one colleague and one security guard, I flew on Iraqi Airways from Baghdad to Erbil, the administrative and commercial capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. "Kurdistan" itself is something of an imagined land, since the ethnic Kurds straddle the mountainous borderlands of northern Iraq, eastern Turk... - The Real World: Baghdad (Life Behind the Blast Walls)23 May 2010, 5:47 pm
The company compound where I stayed during my time in Baghdad was really nothing more than a few city blocks beside the Tigris River enclosed by high blast walls. The neighborhood was once prime real estate, however - just up the river is the former epicenter of Saddam Hussein's regime (today that area is the International Zone). Given its prime position, the neighborhood was previously home to some of Saddam's closest cronies. His wife and other family members owned many of the houses in the ar... - Baghdad: It's Not For Everyone19 May 2010, 10:42 pm
My trip to Iraq began with a 13-hour flight to Dubai. On that leg, my neighbor was one of many Americans on the flight who wore civilian clothes with military-issue desert boots. He was also heading to Iraq, he said, but I decided not to ask him what he was doing there. (Probing the Iraq- and Afghanistan-bound for further information these days usually ends in awkward silences, with smug grins that seem to say, "C'mon, if you knew a damn thing you'd know I ain't answering that.") But my neighbor... - Bed, Bath & Baghdad11 April 2010, 3:38 pm
Since returning in late February from our latest travels, Jacqueline and I have gotten busy reintegrating ourselves into normal American life. Craigslisting, job hunting, traipsing through the rain to visit apartments, purchasing cell phone plans, and shopping for home goods felt like familiar processes, albeit a bit surreal. We decided to resettle in Washington, DC – the city we had left 18 months earlier to move to Morocco. Throughout our time in North Africa, we had reminisced with other fo...

If I were a third grader creating my own Morocco, it would be a country of primary colours whose cities, rivers, and borders - I would add - would be painstakingly coloured within the lines (much to the relief of Western Sahara and a handful of child psychiatrists). I like Meknès. There, I've said it. Out loud. Liking Meknès isn't a something I share with too many of my colleagues but I like it, so there it is. I have an excellent memory of which I am inordinately proud - it's not photographic but pretty darn close. If it's written in print, then I can easily commit it to memory; however, if it's a facial feature, I'm screwed. This is how the gods have repaid my hubris. In fact, it's safe to say that when I meet someone for the first time, even engage in a lengthy conversation with that person, it's...

Welcome to the new Andrea Grill and BBQ, the first one in Marrakech. The chicken wraps are divine, the delicious marinated steaks a secret of Karim's. Omnia and Kemo as we call him are passionate about food, fun and organic produce. We went to have lunch with my parents at the wonderful Ksar Char Bagh. It is a gorgeous spot if you feel like spoiling yourself. Even though it is a fairly new building the architect was a specialist in ancient architecture and also designed the hotel around the Alhambra in Granada so it is truly stunning. The staff are also extremely friendly which is always a plus and they showed me around their organic vegetable plot. The ancient palms give the garden a spiritual lift with the pretty swimmi... - Andrea BBQ - Marrakech, Morocco4 July 2010, 10:47 am

When we arrived at the wedding we were taken to see the wedding salon. I was so suprised in this tiny little mud village at how ornate and big the whole ceremony was. More than 100 guest were due and the wedding ceremonies go on for 5 days. At ladies night only the men from the immediate family are allowed. The evening before was the mens night. The ornate chair for the bride was splendid and my daughter spent great delight in hopping in and out of it. The ornate ... - A Traditional Moroccan Wedding24 May 2010, 5:13 pm

She was worried about wearing too much make up and asked the beautician to do her in a very natural way. The beautician said are you mad your make up has to be done in a certain way as is the tradition otherwise I will loose all my clients and my reputation! The hairstyling was amazing to watch, even though the make up and hair took 4 hours. This is great she said, she has always worried about her thin hair to the point of me buying hair volumising vitamins. As we progressed more...
- FB insanity!29 July 2010, 4:32 pm
So what is it with people and facebook these days? Some are reporting every its and bits of their life step by step as if the entire world cares about them. I had this friend and her husband update their page at least once a day, exchanging love messages, husband posting pictures of his wife every time she eats an icecream then weighs herself, or ends up going to the gym, and some other silly STUPID pics where he says " look at my beautiful wife" Ok !! we get it! your wife is cute and you look j... - Dear Friend. Sorry I forgot You Are (or were) My Friend16 July 2010, 6:05 pm
I received an email from an old friend, apologizing for not being a great friend to me while I was always good to her...Apology was mainly because she forgot to congratulate me on my wedding. Jeez totally forgot she never congratulated me...heck I even forgot that she never responded to my wedding invitation. In my head, I just assumed she was somewhere in some part of the world and she couldn't squeeze me in her schedule. But then again, true friends are there for you to share the greatest mome... - Gotta Be Selfish3 July 2010, 8:00 am
It's one of those days...didn't know what to do with my time the entire day! Been devouring chocolate like there is no tomorrow for the past days, waking up every morning with a bad stomachache promising myself it'd be the last day to put myself through this pain...yet I find myself doing it over and over again as if eating chocolate would eliminate all of my stress. This is really pathetic...I can't wait for the sun to rise to lock myself in the library and be selfish! Why do I need to care abo... - My Morocco--Are You Still Mine??15 May 2010, 7:33 am
It just occured to me that my nostalgia is dying slowly either consciously or unconsciously. I could have made some efforts to go for a visit for a week but I chose not to for some reasons because nothing is the same, and everything is foreign to me in my native country. Somehow, I don't feel safe internally being there all alone...I feel something is missing in me. I am sure I won't survive too long on my own and I will end up booking myself a ticket to come back next day. I don't know if I cha... - Where is The Right Person???15 May 2010, 6:58 am

I was really stunned when I came across a video featuring the epidemic of Leishmaniasis in a small city called Rachidya in Morocco, and inability of affected people to get the right medications for it because there is no doctor in the area. It's quite shocking that the so called Health Ministry is not moving a finger to send appropriate health care providers to start treatment before it gets complicated. Mind you that Leishmaniasis is treatable in most cases except in HIV infected patients. What... - When The Dream is Over7 May 2010, 5:49 am
So you grow up your entire life believing in a dream, and you get so closer to it, then all of the sudden it shatters right in front of your eyes. It gets stolen from you, and you can't do anything about it but leaving it away and turning your back to it. I saw her crying like a baby from the bottom of her heart for the first time, and it was weird to me because I am used to her big smile from ear to ear. There is a price for everything... Sometimes, I wonder if I made the right decision or was I too selfish wanting everything in my life to go the way I want it to go?! Either way someone will always be disatisfied...so I chose to sacrifice my marriage for the moment, and it really breaks my heart and I feel like crying blood at this moment because I know I am selfish. I looked at the mirror this morning and I almost wanted to cry ... My face was sick pale, my skin looked dry, and my eye-lids were half-closed (literally ptosis as if I had Horner's Syndrome)...slight fever, with nothing in the stomach but Soda (my natural amphetamine) for literally the past 3 days...what did I get myself into? I was very nauseous and about to vomit..my whole body started failing me when I needed it the most...I needed strength and I needed confidence to get myself up and go on ... - Evil in The Heart20 February 2010, 5:49 pm
It was a joy to finally meet a Moroccan in my medical school program & also have her in my class. I must admit that this is the first time I have ever encountered a Moroccan in my field of studies let alone any school I have been to. A naive person would think a strong bonding will be formed between us but to my shocking experience I got nothing but bitter competition based on jealousy and big mouth watery with gossips. She is a quite unique package that contains a great deal of misrepresentatio...

While traveling through Agadir last week I got a call from another PCV. Curious (and hungry), I obliged and met up with them shortlythereafter. The rep was from an organization that donates medical supplies to needy and under-funded clinics. Its very rare that a PCV feels in-the-know. Even those of us with TV or internet can’t pretend to understand everything happening in the States; I’m only two days behind on Idol and I still don’t know what a Jonas Brother is. We can only hope to keep up, and to be ahead of the game is unheard of. Or, that is, until today, when the New York Times greeted me thusly:I got a little bit excited. It was one pleasant summer afternoon at a café by the beach in Casablanca, Morocco. I was sitting with a girl who has committed her life, heart, and soul to loving me but I did not reciprocate those same feelings at the time. I will call her Faith. American President Barack Obama sent a letter to King of Morocco Mohamed VI urging him to be the “leader” in establishing Arab-Israeli peace and to “bridge gaps between Israel and the Arab world.” While this sounds constructive and positive, a scrutiny of the details reveals holes. - Scuba in Ibiza5 July 2010, 11:32 pm
When you think of Ibiza, I am sure diving isn't the first thing you think of. Parties, drinking, clubs, drinking, music, more drinking and many late nights come to mind. However, after living (mostly) dry and healthy in Marrakech for a year, we wanted something a little more substantial. Both Jeff and I regretted not visiting Ibiza (as well as Ireland, Croatia and Greece for me) while so close when living in London. So before saying goodbye to Morocco, a little break was in order before a bigger... - Did I really just see that? Taking the bus to work.12 June 2010, 12:01 pm
I have been taking the organised transport to work at ASM since September now, and sights still surprise me. At first the route to the school was a little exciting, maybe even exotic for some. Now, after 10 months of riding on the bus, I am spying more of the weird and wonderful from the windows every day. Some sights are found every where in the world. Not impressive.Jeff and I had planned to hike Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa and 36th highest mountain in the world, for some time since living in Marrakech. Jeff and I traveled to numerous towns, cities and medinas in Morocco on our first two visits, so when we arrived in Marrakech to live, there were not many new places high on our list visit. However, one destination kept standing out to me on our little Lonely Planet guide map, Cascades D'Ouzoud (ouzoud is Berber for olive, of which many trees surround the falls). Jeff and I bought woolly beanies before in Taghazout whilst travelling there for Christmas in 2008. They were warm and thick and made of wool straight off a sheep’s back. Jeff’s even got a little wet and smelt exactly the way I imagine a wet smelly sheep would.Anyway, while swapping the mayhem of Marrakech for laidback Essaouira, with my visiting mum and aunt, we stumbled across Otman. I think the Aussie dollar is at $1 for 7.5 dirhams. So needless to say, strawberries are cheap!Strawberries can be found by the crateful in the supermarket chain Acima, street stall vendors and roaming vendors. I have bought and tasted kilograms from all three sources and they are all as delicious as each other. ... - My first haircut... in Marrakech4 April 2010, 9:29 pm
Waiting for my hairstylist to finish with a client, I surprised myself and read a whole magazine article in French. Granted, I didn’t understand every word, but my reading of French is a whole lot better than my pronunciation and grammar. So when my hairstylist was ready, a quick introduction occurred. Our conversation ended as soon as my French ran out. Some global sign language ensued and then I was relaxing with my neck bent over a basin. What a head massage! I was feeling a little apprehens... - Go and Get Plucked4 April 2010, 9:28 pm
I had been putting it off for too long and knew the consequences. Pain. Agony. Watery eyes. Nice, shapely eyebrows come at a price. So it was time for my first visit to a Moroccan Esthetician for an eyebrow wax. My friend had been to Salon Smira before and liked it for its cheapness and smooth results. So off I went to the small Salon in the building next to mine. Salaam alikom. Eyebrow? Shcccccct (finger pointed at eyebrow).Oui. Eyebrows. No problem. So I sat in the chair, head reclined in a sma...
- SUNSHINE DAY26 July 2010, 6:36 pm
This is a great title, because I'm in a good mood. Also it's really sunny outside and I think I lost ten pounds sweating today. Do you see how there are two meanings there? Because I could flesh it out a little more.See, the word "sunshine" evokes a feeling of carefree bliss. But in the literal sense, "sunshine day" simply describes a hot, sunny day.It also recalls memories of the Brady Kids singing "Sunshine Day" in colorful, fringed costumes. This was most likely both a happy and sweaty event ... - Things I Care About This Week23 July 2010, 3:00 pm
Podcasts.Recently I was trying to log into my iTunes account to buy music but couldn't remember my password. After a series of very unfortunate events I locked myself out of my account indefinitely. Because I don't have a ton of money I figured it was a blessing in disguise and left it that. Then, a revelation. UNTIL YESTERDAY I DIDN'T HAVE THE MICHAEL JACKSON CLASSIC "PYT" IN MY ITUNES LIBRARY. If there was ever a reason to open a new iTunes account, this is it. I mean, that used to be the song ... - I'm American again19 July 2010, 1:54 pm
Hamdullah. After a muggy, cramped, hour-long cab ride in 101 degree heat I arrived in my province capitol to see what's what about my carte sejour.Flashback: Before "Eastern Roadtrip 2010: That Time I Almost Died" I brought my typo-riddled carte sejour to the province police to get it fixed. The biggest problem was that it said I was a French citizen, but there were also a couple issues with the spelling on the Arabic half of it. Instead of saying "mutataw3a" which means volunteer under the occu... - Weird, wild stuff13 July 2010, 9:29 am
I've been traveling a bit. My itinerary was something like this:As you can probably imagine, lots of stuff happened and I took notes on the important things. Let's go to the scribble pad!Fourth of July in my province capitol: awesome. Two volunteers live there, giving us ample space to prepare the feast and eat it, too. Lots of merry was made, bubbles were blown, pictures taken. We even made s'mores, because I am lucky enough to have an incredibly talented cook in my province who made graham cra... - Well-played, ants.1 July 2010, 4:01 pm
Today, in an attempt to get rid of the ants that have infested my kitchen, I managed to spill copious amounts of honey in my sink and drip it all over my floor while cleaning it up. After that, I knocked over my little container of brown sugar.Minstrels will write songs about this.... - Americans are slaves to the clock.29 June 2010, 8:43 am
Syke!Today I had to go to my province capital to turn in some scholarship forms for the kids I am incha’allah bringing to summer camp. The Dar Chabab director had business in the capital, too, so we agreed to meet at 8 am at the taxi stand and travel together.I got to the taxi stand a few minutes before 8 and told the driver where I was going, but that I was going to wait for someone. No big deal. In Morocco, traveling by taxi is a little different in that you cram six passengers into the car,... - a few things24 June 2010, 9:10 pm
I think I've mentioned the summer camp I'm taking some kids to in August, yes? Well.I can take four, and this past week I've been getting them their paperwork so they can get parental permission, ID photos, birth certificates, etc. The plan is for them to get everything filled out and turned into me so I can bring their files to my Ministry of Youth and Sport (they are paying for the scholarship students) representative on Monday. It should be a pretty simple task, right? All four of them know w... - i don't really like grateful dead20 June 2010, 2:57 pm
and yet i have a ton of the dead in my itunes library. what's with that?Anyway, today I realized that my best friend in town is the old man that guards the Dar Chabab. I see him 5 times a week and we almost always walk home from work together (he lives at the bottom of the hill, I live halfway up). His favorite thing to do is sit around and watch the world go by, preferably with a cigarette and a friend to talk with. For this reason, he has become invaluable to me. ...because I'm more likely to work towards them if I post them publicly on the internet.(currently enjoying jaydiohead)Summer 2010 Goal 1!I really want to learn the Single Ladies dance. I'm obsessed with the video. I watched it four times today. I don't get tired of it, and can't fathom a situation where I wouldn't rather be watching it.That's a bold-faced lie, but still. The problem is, everytime I watch it, I watch it with the intention of learning the dance. Then I stand up and try to follow a... - I'm SOMEBODY now!15 June 2010, 8:36 pm
So, this was roughly the reaction I expected to have when my Moroccan ID was delivered to me after waiting 7 months since applying. You know, up until the sniper part. I imagined taking my little pink Carte Sejour in my hands and shrieking to the rooftops about how I'm legally allowed to be in this country now.Instead, my Gendarme handed me the card then informed me there was a typo and my card says I am a French citizen. Why do the gods of identification papers have it in for me?On a different no...

First course was only meat, but then they brought enormous piles of melons, watermelon, grapes, almonds, sugar cookies. Then, half the people walked around and the other half fell asleep on the roof in the light of the bright moon peeking out at us from behind the clouds. I heard this a few days ago from my host dad: ¨Salam waylaykum¨ means Peace be upon you all. It's a plural you, and you use it for Muslim people even when you only see one person standing there. Because it means Peace Be Upon You and God, who is always with Muslim people. ¨Salam waylayk¨ however, is reserved for people that are alone, that don't walk with God, so for that reason, it's a singular you. Peace be upon you, the implication being ... infidel.I might be wrong, but this was ... - 30 June 2010, 9:11 pm
First time in 5 years that my adventure clothes fit again; I've lost 40+ pounds here. But does the boy in the pants have the same capability, the same quality of adventurer? (how much do I still care?)Have I still got it? Or maybe what matters most is that I once had it. I've seen myself go there, I've known how powerful I can be. The trouble is getting through the down times, the small weak hours, to not get too badly discouraged when everything seems to be going wrong. I once had it. I've... - 25 June 2010, 4:11 pm
Status update : watching two matches and reading 200 pages each day, only interrupted by an hour or two runs every other day. And I don't expect that to change for the next 4 weeksThere's a thing that I potentially could do: it's called the SOS village outside of Casablanca. Starts in 6 days, though this would mean that I'd be out of my town for 5 weeks, 2 for that, 1 in Italy, 10 days at the other camp. It's a home with 100 orphans and there's a family in each house that watches over 10 kids...
